What is the Great History Challenge?

The Great History Challenge (GHC) is a fast-paced, buzzer-beating academic competition for middle school students who love history (or who don’t know they love it yet).

For teachers: quick to set up, easy to run, aligned with what you already teach.

For students: high-energy, competitive, and fun — like a sports tournament, but for history buffs.

For schools: a chance to celebrate academic achievement in a way that gets the whole community cheering.

Why Teachers Love It

Simple to implement: everything you need is provided.

Curriculum-aligned: questions are built by teachers, for teachers.

Recognition that matters: spotlight your students for their hard work and curiosity.

Running the Great History Challenge was unbelievably easy — everything was ready to go. My students were completely engaged, and they loved the excitement of competing. It’s rare to see kids cheer this loudly for history!

Why Students Love It

Think game show meets history class. Students compete head-to-head, test their knowledge, and discover how much fun history can be.

Fast-paced and buzzer-based fun (like your favorite game show!)

Recognition for academic talent (finally, something for the history nerds).

A chance to shine in front of their peers, family, and community.

The Great History Challenge felt like a game show! Hitting the buzzer, racing to answer, and cheering with my friends made history way more exciting than I ever imagined.

Celebrating Achievement

Every round of GHC is a chance to celebrate — from classroom competitions to schoolwide events to the national stage. Whether students advance or not, they walk away recognized, celebrated, and inspired.

I’ve never seen my child so excited to show what they know. Watching them compete in the Great History Challenge filled me with pride — it was amazing to see their hard work celebrated in such a fun way.
